The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) is a commercial state body that oversees the safety and security of Irish civil aviation, provides air traffic management (ATM) services in Irish airspace and at state airports and communications services on the Eastern North Atlantic.

Business Situation

The IAA had a requirement for the design, build, hosting and on-going support and maintenance for a new corporate website and content management system (CMS) to replace the existing website at www.iaa.ie. The IAA website is an essential channel for disseminating information to various target audiences in addition to a critical system for business activities such as flight planning.

Solution

Engine Solutions conducted a detailed requirements gathering phase, including requirements workshops with the business managers and the project team, visual design workshops, systems walkthroughs of the current IAA website and the content management system, in addition to reviewing the Google Analytics for the current website. The analysis phase culminated with the delivery of a functional specification document which was the blueprint for the new website.

A new visual design was developed to visually convey the excellent professional standards upheld by the IAA.

Fully responsive page layouts were created for each of the major pages on the website, including homepage, landing page and inner page templates. Custom online flight planning tools were developed which allowed pilots to file flight plans online.

Microsoft Azure was chosen as the hosting provider, providing all the benefits and scale offered by leading edge elastic cloud technologies. A multi-instance deployment was configured, supporting auto-scaling based on the real time demands on the website.
